Bladder Diverticulum

A bladder diverticulum is an outpouching of the bladder lining through a weak spot in the bladder. The most common reason for a bladder diverticulum is a high pressures in the bladder due to outlet obstruction, most commonly from an enlarged prostate.

Some diverticulum are small and do not need treatment. Larger diverticulum should be removed, usually done robotically.

Here is a video of a bladder diverticulectomy, recorded years ago. You can see the identification of the diverticulum through the peritoneal lining. The diverticulum is dissected to its mouth and completely removed. The opening at the bladder is often small, and closed easily with suture. The bladder heals within a week to allow the catheter to be removed and for people to begin voiding on their own.
