What is a Penile Prosthesis or Implant?

A penile prosthesis is a medical device implanted in the penis to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) when other treatment options have been ineffective. It consists of inflatable or malleable components that allow for the achievement and maintenance of an erection.

There are two main types of penile prosthetics: inflatable and semi-rigid. Inflatable prostheses consist of a pump placed in the scrotum and a pair of cylinders that are inserted into the penis. When activated, the pump transfers fluid into the cylinders, creating an erection. Semi-rigid prostheses consist of bendable rods that can be adjusted for sexual activity, providing a less complicated option. You can see more information below about the two types of prostheses

The decision to implant a penile prosthesis is generally made after a thorough evaluation, including medical history and examination, to determine that the individual is a suitable candidate for the surgery.

Penile prostheses can significantly enhance quality of life for individuals struggling with ED, restoring sexual function and intimacy. However, like all surgical procedures, they carry risks, and potential complications.

I have been perfoming penile prosthetic procedures throughout my practice. My experience has earned me the designation of a Center of Excellence, recognized by Boston Scientific for my achievements.

How To Decide About a Penile Implant

Many men have erectile dysfunction that requires treatment. Many men will progress through medication, vacuum devices, and penile injections as their erectile dysfunction becomes more severe. When these options fail men are then faced with the decision of when and if to choose the surgical option of a penile implant.

A penile implant is a permanent solution for a man suffering with erectile dysfunction and offers an erection whenever and wherever desired. It is a great solution for men who have exhausted other options who still want to be sexually active. Penile implants are safe, reliable and have a very high satisfaction among those men who choose the procedure.

3-piece or Inflatable Penile Prosthesis

A 3 piece penile prosthesis is considered the "gold standard" when discussing penile prostheses. The device will get firm when inflated from a reservoir of fluid using a pump hidden in the scrotum. The device can be "deflated" using the deflate button on the pump that allows for the fluid to be transferred back into the reservoir.

Semi-Rigid Prosthesis

A semi-rigid penile prosthesis works well for men who want an easy solution for the implant. As seen in this video the device simply moves into position when ready for use. This device works well for men with limited hand dexterity as well. Some men find this device difficult to hide when not sexually active because it is always semi-firm.

Which Implant Should I Choose?

Most men will need to make the decision of a semirigid rod vs an inflatable device. both types of implants work very well and one is not better than another. The three piece device is the type used most often and men choosing this device are able to have a rigid erection when fully inflated and a flaccid penis when the device is deflated. The semi-rigid device is most often used when men have limited manual dexterity, but even men with good hands elect the semi-rigid device for its simplicity and longevity.

Learning to use the 3 piece Tenacio pump

Learning how to use the penile prosthesis pump can be challenging for some men. The pump is hidden in the scrotum. The discreet nature of the implant is great for men who are sensitive about their implant, but learning the “feel” of the pump requires a learning curve. Boston Scientific will provide you with a replica pump model for you to compare to what you are feeling in your scrotum. The video I made here hopefully will help you learn the pump as well. Good luck and don’t hesitate to reach out with questions.
